Petition Started to Remove Southport Police Chief

As of 9:30 P.M. this evening Det. Byron Vassey of the Southport NC, Police Department turned himself into the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. Almost 14 hours early of his noon on Wednesday deadline Vassey entered the BCSO booking facility and was out on bond in by 10:30 P.M. This news broke following the story of Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove issuing a statement saying that Vassey would remain on Paid Administrative leave until he was able to meet with District Attorney Jon David to discuss the case.
In the midst of all the commotion caused by today's press conference, A group of people have begun to voice a concern about the Leadership in the Southport Police Department. About 11:30 P.M. Tuesday night a petition was started on the popular site change.org , Directed at Southport Mayor Robert Howard to Remove Chief Dove from his position.
I being from the area, am connected to alot of people on the social media networks. This was something that was shared on facebook and I saw it. I decided to do a little digging to validate the claims in the petition. I found every instance listed in the petition with very little effort. Read the petition and then just Google the names contained therein. It outlines some pretty interesting reason why this group wants him removed.. This is the text of the petition:

Since he became Chief, Jerry Dove has over seen the actions and duties of no less than four Southport Police Officers/Employees that Committed Crimes, Ranging from a Sexual Nature to Manslaughter.

Most recently Byron Vassey Who was indicted on 2/3/2014 for the Voluntary Manslaughter of Keith Vidal.

On 3/2/2013 Southport PD Chaplin and longtime employee Anthony Buntyn was arrested. According to the warrants, Buntyn is accused of sending obscene cell phone pictures to someone named Margaret Spivey. He also reportedly told two people he was a member of sworn-in law enforcement.

This is an excerpt from the star news on 3/16/2009

James Connolly was fired from the Southport Police Department on Friday, as he was found guilty of contempt of court in Brunswick County and sentenced to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, Southport Police Chief J.V. Dove said. Connolly joined the police department in August 2004 and had been on paid suspension for the past three weeks pending an investigation, Dove said.

“I’m very embarrassed,” Dove said. “I apologize to the folks of Southport.”

And that my friends is not all, In his 2nd year on the job (4/20/2004) Southport Officer Edward Meyer Shot his wife in the arm with his service pistol. This officer was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Granted one bad decision can be misconstrued as a fluke, but four, two of which seriously injured or killed a civilian is a pattern.

This man has exhibited a clear lack rational while engaging in the selection of his officers. He has hired 2 officers in 10 years that Have killed or maimed someone. His ability to judge character has now come into question. HE DOES NOT HAVE CONTROLL OF HIS OFFICERS. He does not require they be fully trained to deal with the public, and he continues to authorize paid administrative leave for an accused killer. I, the Citizens of Brunswick County , and the city of Southport are tired of seeing the debacles of the Southport PD on the news.. With this petition I implore You, Robert Howard Mayor of the City of Southport, to remove Jerry Dove as the Acting Chief of Police and Stop Paying an accused murderer.

The link to this petition can be found below:

You be the Judge.. Is this group of Concerned Citizens Right in what they are asking of Mayor Howard?

Should a Supervisor be Punished for his underlings actions?

You decide, I look forward to seeing your comments.
