No Snow Day for NYC Kids

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     AliciaNYC told me, 'The conditions seem to be a lot better this afternoon than they were this morning. The big concern now will be if all that wet snow freezes over tonight. On the way home I noticed there were lots of people busy, trying to get the sidewalks as clean as possible. There is still lots of icy slush puddles on corners, some almost eight inches deep, making it very hard for pedestrians to get around. Good thing I did not see any major damage!'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

So I woke up this morning to the sound of freezing rain on my window, I though for sure there would be no school today, but I soon learned that this was not so for NYC kids.

So I got my son ready and we headed out with much trepidation. As I expected it was icy and our block was not plowed even though it is Riverside Dr. Once we got to the end of the block we were surprised to see a school bus blocking traffic in both directions on the 158th st hill coming off the exit for the West Side Highway. This is a major exit for ambulances going to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. What appeared to us is that the bus was trying to make it up the hill, and was probably slipping to much. While trying to get more traction, the bus slid back on to the sidewalk barely missing two trees. It was stuck there. We could not tell if there were kids inside yet, because of the tinted windows. It was 8 AM already so there were probably some kids.

On another corner there was a cab that had stopped to pick up a passenger and got stuck. He attempted to dig himself out with no success and then attempted to push himself out to no avail. We had to leave for school, but both of these vehicles were still stuck when we headed to the 1 train.

We thought our commute would be smooth sailing from there, but then the train went out at 103rd St. Trains were stuck in both directions with no estimate when they would be back up and running. Luckily we were only one stop away and got off and walked. Lucky for us, but maybe not so lucky for lots of other NYC kids.

What kind of weather will close down schools in NYC?
