    Pet lover marries bubble boy

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     claypoet says her husband 'does love animals and it's been very disappointing for him to try different animals in our home and have to give them up.' But they're happy with their unconventional pets.
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

I am a pet lover. Growing up, I always had animals. I imagined that one day, I'd get married and we'd share our home with kids and furry friends. Then the unexpected happened. I fell in love with the bubble boy. He told me his stories about staying in oxygen tents for months at a time because his asthma was so severe as a child. He told me about the medications they gave him to breathe and how they affected his weight. He told me about how the day his beloved dog died, the asthma stopped and that's when they found out. We wanted to get married but I had a dog of my own, a dog I'd loved for 13 years. I had to leave her behind the day we got married. He had spent years getting weekly shots to help build up his immunity to animals in hopes that one day, we could have a dog together. It never worked. He loved me enough to try getting different dogs - we tried a shitzu and a poodle. He was allergic to both. We tried bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs. He wasn't allergic to cats but we both wanted a dog. We settled for a cat.

Then as years went by, I got even more creative. We got a hedgedog. We got a parrot. The hedgedog didn't work out so now we have a chinchilla. Success! And we still have our parrot. We also now have 2 cats and have plans to get a pig. We are unique people, so a pig would fit right in to our unique home. The point is, if you love animals, don't give up. Even if all you can have is a lizard, be willing to try. Animals of all kinds need loving homes and you don't have to throw in the towel over a bad experience or two. Now, I'm a cat person.

People think about the loss a person's takes when they are allergic to animals but they don't think about how it affects their pet loving spouse or even their kids. It's hard to say to your kids that they can't ever have a dog. For us, my husband wanted to give me something that was very important to me and he couldn't do it. I love him so much for his willingness to try. That's all I ever asked for and I'm glad that in our willingness to not give up that we found some wonderful furry friends to call our own after all.
