SubNormal Sudoku, Another Isogram Sudoku in My Horror Sudoku Series

Subnormal is a great "horror" word. I especially like it because most people would not think of subnormal if asked to list words that they associate with horror. But subnormal denotes and connotes something horrifying. It connotes monsters but in a more subtle way. It denotes physical and/or mental abnormalities. But subnormal is a better word than abnormal and not only because it is an isogram and thus can be used to construct my Isogram Sudoku. I like it better because it is rarely used and has not lost its poetic power from overuse.

Subnormal also carries more distinctly horrific meaning than abnormal. When I hear or read "abnormal", I think of abs. And the abdominal muscles are not even remotely scary. Although, after seeing some old photographs of Arnold Schwarzenegger's stomach I think that that is the real meaning of "abnormal". Or maybe what "abnormal" is, is what the average Joe sees when he looks at his torso in the mirror. Abnormal.

Subnormal, though, is less than normal. It is something below normal (primitive, primal), underneath normal (hidden under the surface, submerged). Subnormal. S u b n o r m a l. The more I write the word, the creepier it seems. That "mal" bothers me. Subnor mal. Subnor male. Subnormale. I hope I never come across one at night in Safeway.
