Michael Libow, owner of the Witch's House in Beverly HIlls, CA (90210) has received "Landmark Status" upon his house due to it being of significant historical and architectural significance in relevance to the City of Beverly Hills. The home is known as "Landmark #8" in the city.
Built as a movie set and studio office in 1920 by the famed Harry Oliver of Willat Studios, the home was purchased and moved to Beverly Hills in the late 1920's by Mr. Ward Lascelle who had produced films with the Willats. He and his wife, Lillian, made it their home. Lillian later remarried to a Mr. Spadina providing the name often associated with the home.
After his purchase of it in 1998, Mr. Libow undertook the gargantuan project of renovating the house while keeping its style true to the original designer's intentions. The extensive remodeling took many years to complete as Libow would settle for nothing less than his desired 'imperfect perfection'.
Prior to the house getting "Landmark Status" designated to it by the Beverly Hills City Council, a consulting firm was hired to dig deep into the house's past and provide a comprehensive report on the pedigree and provenance of the Witch's House. The report included every single detail, including the original deed to the house. Once it was presented to the Council members, the house was immediately approved and given Landmark Status.
Michael Libow graciously shares his house with the entire Los Angeles community each Halloween by hosting a "Green Halloween" event in the front of the property which attracts as many as 4,000 trick-or-treaters in just a few hours. Streets are barricaded by the city of Beverly Hills that night for the express purpose of providing a safe haven for the children. Green Halloween is a national organization promoting the use of non-toxic clothing and distribution of healthy treats to children. . in lieu of the cavity-causing sugary snacks.
Michael Libow is the official "Caretaker of The Witch" and intends to continually upgrade and maintain this now local historic landmark in his beloved city of Beverly Hills.
