    Abandoned buildings

Wheeling-Pitt Steel Mill in Steubenville, Ohio

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iso640 is an interactive designer and urban explorer in Silver Spring, Maryland. 'Urban exploration can be dangerous, so if anyone reading about it would like to try it, remember to always take a friend, tell someone where you’re going and be smart. If it looks too dangerous, it probably is. There is no exploration worth injury or death (which, sadly, does happen from time to time).' See more of her work at iso640.com.

I got the opportunity to explore this mill not long before it was demolished for scrap.

I'm fascinated with industrial abandonments mostly because it shows how far America has come and how stagnant our country is as a producer of goods. It wasn't that long ago that people could make a decent living in this country making things. Now people buy these bastions of commerce and scrap them for money--tearing down and shipping jobs to foreign countries instead of continuing to invest in America and her prosperity.

I think America's abandonments say more about this countries penchant for capitalism above all else (and this equally applies to all the abandoned mental health facilities in the country). What we don't care for, well, we don't care for.
