Abandoned Peyton Colony School in Texas

Peyton Colony Texas began life being known by the local whites as Freedman's Colony. A "freedman" was an ex slave. in 1865 after the Civil War ended and slavery was abolished, recently freed slave Peyton Roberts, migrated to the community when he received public land there through preemption. Roberts helped organize the community and together they built the first school, church and post office around 1872. The school and the original church are all that remain. Much of the property in and around Peyton is still owned by the descendants of the original freedmen settlers.
