Lytton, British Columbia
This iReport is part of an assignment:
Abandoned settlement near Lytton, BC, Canada
It's not that easy to find this place. It's pretty close to a relatively busy road but the area is slashed in half by a near-by body of water. Another problem is that there's no bridge to get to the other bank of the river. Once this obstacle is taken over, there's quite an intense hike, either to follow the old road or by venturing along the river that can be rough at times. One has to walk on huge boulders which are equally dangerous when they are splashed from rapidly running river. After an hour or so, when the common sense tells you about this senseless hike, there's another steep hill to hike up when your head is only full of doubts about the whole enterprise.
All of the sudden, in the middle of bushes, some old and abandoned dwellings start showing up. There are more of them within an easy perimeter when wandering around, this time on easy flat land. Spread around old furniture and household items attest to someone living here but no-one knows how long time ago and why it was all abandoned. One starts asking questions about the inhabitants who were managing their area pretty well with the household, livestock and while just “doing” the things around their garden, garage and in nearby field. A link road to the main communication artery running through the forest is pretty well paved – someone was using a car that ended up down in a ditch, now covered with rust. Quite a huge side wall of the barn in the middle of the rocky field (very well prepared with even layer of boulders) never made it to its vertical position.
Entering the small house reveals how it may have looked like when its owners were still around, looking after the household. Painted walls in the kitchen equipped with still present cook top, able to burn wood, good shaped windows with now broken glass and other feeling of decency of the past owner(s) fills the air on every single step in this mysterious world of life suspended in time, still mysterious and so far unresolved.
