Maidan Memorial at Night Feb 23 night-am, Kyiv Ukraine

Went to Maidan almost hoping for some wild bachanalia- some parties blowing off steam, crying exhaustion, pressure, bronchitis, and danger of covering the last 6 weeks of battle. But no, of course, Maidan has been a dry zone, as a matter of policy, PR, and discipline- a good thing considering the Slavic propensity for alcohol (medical alcohol costs 10 times more here cause people will, ah, drink it). And of course, after the incredible blood-letting of the last few days, one which could have been much worse, there were heroes to mourn- 78 killed in only 3 days, 50 Thursday just to take a lousy 2 blocks of the city.. but a sacrifice that shattered the will of the Berkut, police, Party of Regions, and Yanu's henchmen. Living like a vampire, I've been sleeping all day after working all night on converting hours of video, reading all the news, updating my BLOG - I started covering this Nov 1 w a Yahoo article on the much ballyhooed EU Association Agreement, which I said he would never sign- all indications were negative.

Wandering the huge flower-covered Maidan I was confused where the burnt destroyed trash evident in the pics near the Stella Tower was (formerly tents of friends, ITmedia tent, Spilno TV domes- did some live historic streaming video of Maidan and incinerated Press Center Feb). Seeing the former guy's pics I understand the massive cleaning operation that the Protesters did- the organization, responsibility, and efficiency of this whole thing has been breathtaking from the first day, the envy of any Army in the world.

NOTE: Video is a scroll of stills of the victims (knew 1 or 2), but extremely grainy- some synch problem between the frame rate of mpeg, and the displayed video I guess. Jittering at beginning is unknown- I don't shake at that frequency.
