    Your child's travel firsts

    Iceland in March

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Mary-Jo Roth wanted to show her six-year-old son John that exotic places don't always have palm trees. So for their family vacation, they traveled to Iceland. "Iceland is extremely child-friendly; we were blown away once we got there," she said.

Roth deemed John old enough for this trip because he would be able to remember it, and he was looking for a little adventure. "To make the trip special we made sure the kids were active participants," she told us. What were some of the activities they planned? Anything from climbing a volcano in heavy winds to soaking in a geothermal pool.

Roth, herself, began traveling when she was in college, but she wishes she started when she was younger. "I cannot speak for anyone else on when a child is ready for travel. Our little ones were asking for a trip," she said.

On our first trip out of the country. Our son asked us to pull over as we came to Snaefellsnes. He jumped out onto a little lava mound and I captured this picture as he turned his back to the biting wind.
