View of Cusco from the Qorikancha or Temple of the Sun

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Travel blogger LuxuryFred was standing in the doorway of the Convent Santo Domingo when he took this shot of the city of Cusco with the hills in the background. "Cusco is a beautiful city, and I liked how the wide angle captures the Temple of the Sun in the foreground, the city in the background and the beautiful sky and clouds above," he said. This photo was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day on April 3, 2014.
    - Verybecoming, CNN iReport producer

Cusco, Peru is a an amazing place. Although filled with tourists of all types, it retains a special spirituality and still remains somehow Incan. I've been fortunate enough to visit the city a few times, most recently with a small group Discovery Tour with Gate 1 Travel.

While I enjoy independent adventures, it was a great experience to travel throughout the country with a native Peruvian as our guide. Our tour manager Edgar, born and raised in Cusco, referred to himself as "the last Inca" and provided a vivid link between the past (the past of his own ancestors) and the present. That's what travel is all about to me, learning about and connecting with a new culture, and he made that connection for all 14 of us on that tour.

I took the photo during our visit to the Temple of the Sun, known as the Qorikancha, using a GoPro HERO3 camera. This was in March, 2013.
