    Stigma the biggest obstacle to fighting HIV/AIDS in Kenya

     

    The picture above is that of Martha and her daughter Vera milking a cow at their home. Martha and her daughter are HIV positive. Martha’s husband has lived with HIV for more than 25 years and does not use medication. He only uses herbs for curing the virus.

    Vera is 8 years and does not know that she is HIV positive. Her father and mother have decided not to reveal to her that she is HIV positive because they fear that she will be stigmatized. I interacted with Vera who told to me she feels that her healthy is not well but does not know the problem.

    “I have painful scars in my legs and consistent pain in my neck. My mother took me to the health-center but did not tell me the problem,” said Vera.
