TouchTone Wireless Chief Executive Officer James D'Asti's Family Learns What 'Hero' Means from the Warrior Amputee Football Team
Whippany, N.J. - When the D'Asti family headed out for the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team's game on January 29, 2014, little did they expect the experience to touch their souls and teach their whole family firsthand about the sacrifices the nation's heroes make.
It all started when TouchTone Wireless Chief Executive Officer James D'Asti' expanded his company's offerings to include discounted, low cost cellular and home phone plans for the nation's heroes and made a commitment to serve the hero population by supporting the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team (WWAFT). As a sponsor of the WWAFT charity flag football game to raise awareness and support for military servicemen and women who lost limbs while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, D'Asti loaded his family into the car and took them to the game.
While he and his family thoroughly enjoyed seeing 9-11 first responders from New York and New Jersey fire departments and their families, the Wounded Warrior Amputee Football Team (WWAFT) and legends from the New York Giants, New York Jets and other NFL teams participate in this historic game, the real action happened when the children and adult spectators had an opportunity to connect one-on-one with the players.
As the players came onto the field to give autographs, most of the children, including D'Asti's three children, immediately headed for the NFL players. D'Asti leaned over to explain to them that the true heroes were the wounded warriors who had given so much for their country and had asked nothing in return. The boys got it. They turned to wounded warriors and began asking for autographs from the true heroes.
While D'Asti's back was turned, a commotion started behind him. Turning around, he saw a group of reporters and photographers focusing on his son Vincenzo and BJ Ganem, one of the wounded warrior football players, as Vincenzo peppered BJ with the kind of questions any five year old would ask: "How did you lose your leg?" "What does it feel like?" "Can I see it?" Of course, BJ graciously answered all of Vincenzo's questions about his prosthetic leg, even taking it off to show Vincenzo. D'Asti found himself fighting back the tears. He was so touched by Ganem's graciousness, proud of his son and thankful for the men and women that serve our country every day.
D'Asti recounted, "At this point, it really dawned on me that this was not just a football game, it was an awakening. It was hard to hold back my emotions as I explained to my children that men like BJ, without question or hesitation, put their lives on the line for people like us that they will never meet. And, that in our lifetimes, we could never repay these brave heroes for the sacrifices that they have made. Watching these guys be so proud and not miss a beat, I will never look at our military or any first responder the same. These are the men and women that deserve to be on the covers of the magazines we read."
This event inspired D'Asti to renew TouchTone Wireless' commitment to serving those who support and protect the USA.
