This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Allergic to your pet?

Asthma, allergies, two cats and a small apartment

Ever since I can remember I have been allergic to furry animals. Growing up, I was the girl who couldn't survive a sleepover because of my friends' cats and dogs.

When I met my boyfriend and found out he had a cat, I was convinced that the relationship wasn't going to work out because I would get too sick to spend extended periods of time at his house. Four years and one more cat later, and I am totally loving my sneezy life in our small Oakland apartment. My allergies are better when we thoroughly clean on a regular basis (my boyfriend helps by doing the sweeping!). The wood floors and temperate Bay Area weather helps as well.

Since I have been living with allergies and asthma all my life, I copy by simply accepting that I will likely be a sneezy/stuffy person for the rest of my life. I am on the maximum number of allergy medications that I could be prescribed and I'm also toying with the idea of trying acupuncture to reduce my symptoms. I might be crazy but I'm also hoping to add a hypoallergenic dog to our family soon!

I would be lying if I said that some days (especially mornings) aren't absolutely miserable. I certainly don't help the situation when I consistently let the cats sleep on my pillow or under the covers with me, but I am an animal lover through and through so I can't help myself! My symptoms include regularly itchy skin, wheezing, stuffy nose, runny eyes, sneezing, the whole nine yards. People who don't know me often think I'm suffering from a cold but in reality I'm just allergic to my pets!

I would never recommend this lifestyle to another person but I love my cats and I wouldn't change my life for anything!
