Usher in Spring
A Maiko, in Kyoto, visits the Kitano Tenmangu shrine, to offer prayers for the success, of her dance performance, at the Setsubun festival. This festival is celebrated on the eve of the first day of Spring.
She stops to admire the drops of rain and the flower buds on the trees. Ume (Plum) blooms signal the early start of Spring in Japan.
She is wearing a traditional silk furisode kimono, that echoes the soft seasonal colors and motifs of early spring.
