HAZMAT Called for Truck Spill
Shawnee, OK--- A commercial truck traveling eastbound on W. MacArthur from Airport Road lost a barrel from the back of the truck, causing a spill at that intersection.
At 11:40 PM driver Melanie Clemens was headed for St. Anthony's Shawnee Hospital for an appointment when she observed the Western Marketing Inc.'s truck lose a barrel.
"They turned right off airport road onto Macarthur eastbound, the blue barrel just flew off and the lid popped off and it just spilled. They didn’t stop until they got to that first OBU driveway going back to south. I guess they didn't know they lost it at first. It was a yellow liquid,” she said.
She called police, according to her phone data at 11:45 PM. Shawnee Police and Fire Department responded within minutes to the scene where they contained the spill and waited for January Enivronmental Serivces out of Oklahoma City, a HAZMAT cleanup comany.
Art Gizel, spokesman for Western Marketing, Inc. said they have a contract with January Environmental Services in the event of these types of incidents. The container was a 16 gallon keg of lubricant. Gizel said they do not know yet what caused the the keg to dislodge from the truck.
"We immediately responded. We have a spill plan in place so we contacted January. We will further educate our employees as to what happened, and how it happened to avoid it in the future," said Gizel.
Lt. Mason Wilson said the truck spilled axel grease, which he described as a yellow liquid.
"We have all the driver's and trucking company's information. They will be held responsible." The trucking company is Western Marketing from Stround, Oklahoma.
