Jon Landers: Brings Success From The Big Apple Indie Music Series
I had the pleasure of meeting Jon Landers through a mutual friend of ours. We talked a lot about what he liked to do involving our businesses and we had an instant connection. As I interviewed Jon, I didn’t know that he has done and continues to do so much. While talking to him via Skype I was amazed at his passion for his business and the people that he’s worked with.
In early 2000 Jon came across a company The Creative Group. The Creative Group was going out of business and Jon decided to buy the company. It was a graphic design business that was originally in Brookfield, CT and the owner sold it to move to Florida and get remarried. Jon happened to see it online and he bought it. Talk about being at the right place at the right time! The industry started to change after 9/11, which caused Jon to downsize his staff. He also worked as one of the first agencies to sell Home Depots. Working in Real Estate for a short while, Jon was determined to do more. At the time of buying Creative Group, Jon had been going through some personal problems and he then turned to music, which helped him cope with life.
Reuniting with his high school buddies, Jon organized class reunions for his classmates. He then organized other reunions as well, which helped him get over his personal problems that he was going through. Three years he started something called “ Networking With Music and Travel” where he rented a big space and had a luxury-networking event. He did them monthly and his concept was for business professionals to network for an hour and then have live music from independent artists and then network with those artists. Pretty cool idea! It was a hit! Jon ended up joining tons of meet up groups and went and networked better and wanted to learn from it.
With Jon being a fan of music and the music industry he develops and puts on musical showcases for independent artists to perform. Jon’s approach is to invite A&R reps to these show cases to hear new talent. This can be a win-win for all parties involved. I was invited to one of the showcases, which will also be live streamed. Jon invites all artists whether they are due to perform or not. They will network and can buy a pitch session where they can speak to an executive and have their music pitched and talk one on one for 5 minutes! So far it’s been very successful and on Jon’s website he has a list of A&R’s that comes to his events with their contact info etc. This approach is very different and unique.
I love the energy that Jon had while I interviewed him. His passion and love your music and his business is amazing and so humble. The people that come across his path have been very please with his work ethic. I wish him well on all of his endeavors and I look forward to coming to one of his events.
