I recently traveled to Sri Lanka for a one-month vacation. I had no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised at a land I discovered. Although Colombo is the capital city, limiting my experience to only Colombo does not give justice to the country. If anything, Colombo is home base to everything else on the island. This is a very busy city, with tuk tuk drivers everywhere, spicy food, colonial hotels, good food, a lot of history, friendly people, and an occasional monkey or two. One of the temples in Colombo even has a temple elephant inside of it. My journey throughout Sri Lanka began at Colombo on a scenic train, unlike anything else I have ever done. There is something for almost everyone in Sri Lanka. If you are interested in tea, this is the place to visit. Nuwara Eliya is full of tea plantations that go back as far as the mid 1800's. This area is known as the Hill Country. If you like wildlife, Sri Lanka is a must-see destination. I seen monkeys in Colombo, an elephant in the city, and away from Colombo there are many national parks, full of elephants, leopards, lizards, monkeys, and a lot of exotic birds. One of the highlights of my trip was when I visited Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. This elephant orphanage was very nice and there is also an area near the orphanage where you can see the elephants, as they head to the river and bathe. I have never seen to many elephants, enjoying themselves. You can also take a boat, out into the ocean, near Sri Lanka's coast and watch whales. If you like food, Sri Lanka is full of many tasty dishes, all throughout the country. Every meal, for the entire month-long trip was outstanding. If you like beauty, you cannot pass up Sri Lanka. This land is full of beautiful waterfalls, mountains, scenic drives, natural wonders, and other sights that you will not see anywhere else. If you are interested in old colonial-style buildings, come visit Sri Lanka. All throughout the island are old hotels that go back to the 1800's, are full of charm and elegance. The hotel staff at all of the hotels are exceptional and will also server you a nice cup of tea. You cannot go wrong, if you visit Sri Lanka. You will be surprised and want to return. I know that I do.
