Protests Erupt in Turkey Following Boy's Death

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     natehovee said a large group of students at Yeditepe University in the Atesehir District of Istanbul, came together to protest against Prime Minister Erdogan after 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who was injured during the Gezi Park protests last June and has been in a coma for 269 days, died on the morning of March 11. "Many students are chanting and holding up signs or photos of Berkin," he said. "The students moved throughout campus, calling a number of onlooking peers to join the demonstration from nearby classrooms and walkways."

With nationwide municipal elections less than three weeks away, tensions are rising throughout Turkey following the death of a 15-year-old boy who went into a coma last June after a police officer shot him in the head with a canister of tear gas during the infamous Gezi Park protests. It was reported that the young boy was on his way to get bread for his family when he was targeted and shot. Berkin Elvan passed away Tuesday morning at a hospital in Istanbul after being in a coma for 269 days. Doctors reported that his health had deteriorated over the past several weeks, and his body weight had dropped to just 35 pounds.

Mourners and protesters clashed with police outside the hospital on Tuesday as crowds gathered near the entrance. Riot police fired tear gas at some 2,000 protesters near the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. At Yeditepe University (pictured), a private institution of approximately 20,000 students located on the Asian side of Istanbul, hundreds of students demonstrated on campus, walking between university buildings, chanting and calling their peers in nearby classrooms to join, and holding up signs and pictures of Berkin. In Kadıköy, a popular neighborhood at the edge of the Bosphorus Straight that is home to many university students, several water canon tanks rolled onto one of the main avenues Tuesday evening in preparation of further demonstrations.
