    Dissertation Topics for English Students

A dissertation is the major hurdle between a student and his academic degree. Upon successful completion, a dissertation stands as proof that the student is now ready to join the academic ranks of researchers.

Students who take English as their core subject in MBA have a large number of topic options to choose from. Take a look at some of the subjects that an MBA student can create his literature dissertation.

Study of Authors: One of the most favored subjects among English Literature students is to study the works of a famous author, poet or playwright. A student might do a critical analysis of a writer’s style of writing; he can compare his writing style with another author or he can compare the style of his writing before and after a major transforming event. The goal of the dissertation is to make an original contribution to the field so the work of other authors should not be repeated, only used as relevant references. Hence a student can either bring to light something completely new in the field or expand the work of another author.

Study of Genre: A highly interesting and imaginative subject is the study of different genres in English Literature. A genre can consist of poetry, drama, romance, tragedy, comedy, horror and dozens of author writing types. A student can focus his dissertation on one or more types of genre and go into its in depth analysis; this can also include referencing the works of writers who have written for that genre. A student can do a comparative study by comparing to different types of genre and which is more popular. Another aspect that student can analyze in his dissertation is why a certain type of genre was popular at a certain type but is not anymore.

Study of Different Periods of Literature: Students and researchers have created great dissertations in the past which studies the literature of different period. This kind of dissertations often depict the genres that were most popular at that time. A student can create an argumentative dissertation by challenging the accepted designation of genres of different time periods. For example, there is a lot of confusion among the mass audience upon the real definition of ‘Romanticism’; a student can clarify this in his English dissertation.

Study of Multiple Disciplines: One of the most fascinating types of dissertations is one which consist of a mix of multiple disciplines. For example a student can create a dissertation by comparing the concept of biology in the nineteenth century to gauge the attitudes of the people of that time towards science. A lot of dissertations are created which intermingle history, philosophy, morality and literature together to make a fascinating and unique piece of writing.

Study of Different Mixes: English Literature is an open topic and the student should not limit himself to any particular theme. It is perfectly permissible, even encouraged to mix the different types of genre, time periods and disciplines to create a single piece of dissertation. By thinking out of the box, the student can proof to the dissertation committee that he can contribute something new and fresh to the field.
