Many hungry patrons & food-lovers were left perplexed when the Baja Fresh Mexican eatery folded up shop in late 2013 at the Point Loma Loma Shopping Square and disappeared seemingly overnight!

The old Baja Fresh locale was depressingly empty for a while until just recently when a Native Foods Cafe recently came on board and set up shop. Lots of construction activity meant something new was coming but no one knew until  Native Foods Cafe signs went up saying "Opening Soon!"

This new eatery stirring up excitement in the neighborhood is special because it is a vegan specialist and has some of the most delicious dishes. It's reputation for great food precedes it and my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Loma Square Shopping Center, where the new Native Foods Cafe is soon to arrive, generally has fast food and pizza places but also offers healthy options at Jamba Juice. This mall is located at the busy intersection of Midway Drive and Rosecrans Street. This area is frantically busy because so many stores that people like to shop at (Target, Home Depot, the post office) are nearby. Having such a good option to eat healthy and vegan is so wonderful for all the Navy personnel and workers who have offices and military bases nearby.

On Friday, March 7, I witnessed several workers moving patio furniture into the Cafe, located at 3369 Rosecrans St. I drove by and asked the men when the new place was expected to open up for business? Their mutual reply? "A few weeks."According to the Native Foods Cafe, it will open the new eatery in April.

Anticipation is high. I have eaten at a north county Native Foods Cafe in Encinitas. Love the Lavender Lemonade! Also, Kale salads are wonderful and actually this overly-hyped green can be fixed up here so deliciously that you actually look forward to eating it at Native.
My son loves the yummy sweet potato fries and I die for the carrot cream cheese cupcake!! So you can see, Native makes it so eating healthy is interesting and going vegan is not akin to bland food and boring meatless dishes.

According to the company website, "Native Foods Café was founded in 1994 in Palm Springs, California." The Café is the "premier chef-crafted vegan restaurant serving homemade, fresh food every day of the week."

I spoke with the manager of a popular Loma Square business afterwards and he seemed pleased with the potential new neighbor. However, he did note that he had heard the Cafe was having trouble fitting in their standard furniture into the new layout because it was not "meeting current ADA guidelines." I am excited that the new Cafe will offer a patio for dining but I am not sure of what this layout will be because the fencing is still up and I do not want to go traipsing around a construction zone. But I eagerly await the Cafe's opening and cannot wait to GO NATIVE!
