Why study abroad? Ask Michelle Obama

    A mother's view

My daughter is studying Classics at the University of Exeter, England and is just applying for her visa now to study at William and Mary college in Virginia, US for a year. I am very excited for her as I think a year abroad is a fantastic idea. Yes it is expensive, although the EU do provide funding for all EU students to study in other EU countries very cheaply, so even the poorest students do get a chance to study abroad. The world is a global market nowadays and experiencing another country and culture gives you a huge advantage in employment. Also travel broadens the mind. As an airline employee I have visited many countries and my children have experienced so many countries and cultures that I think it makes them better people and much more employable. I don't think there are any more risks than going away to any university in your own country. I think it can only be a good thing for more students to take part in these schemes. The photo is myself in Rome.
