UWL Rec Sports Staff Responds With #NICEnominations

#NICEnominations is an initiative created by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Rec Sports Staff to counteract “NekNomination”. NekNomination is an online drinking game that challenges others to a drinking competition, promoting irresponsible drinking. The #NICEnominations is a positive initiative that encourages people to participate in acts of kindness throughout their community and challenges others to subsequently do the same.
To start #NICEnominations, UWL Rec Sports building managers shoveled ice off the sidewalk in front of Common Grounds; the campus ministry building. A video was created and posted to the UWL Rec Sports YouTube page. The video has 900 views and counting. They nominated another program in Rec Sports, the intramural supervisors, to beat the challenge. They were given one week.
Intramural Supervisors made stress balls and handed them out to students as they walked through campus. A video was also made of this #NICEnominations and is posted on UWL Rec Sport’s YouTube page. The intramural supervisors nominated customer service representatives, another program within Rec Sports, to beat the challenge. They also challenged University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s recreational department’s intramural supervisors.
The customer service representatives made cookies, brownies, and hot chocolate. They went to a warming shelter at a local Baptist Church in La Crosse, handing out bake goods and hot chocolate to the individuals that rely on the shelter. A video of this act of kindness has been posted on UWL Rec Sport’s YouTube page. Special event supervisors and promotional specialists, both programs within UWL Rec Sports, have been nominated to beat this challenge.
#NICEnominations has already had a positive impact on the community. Erin Thacker, Assistant Athletic Director for Operations, Intercollegiate Athletics Event Coordinator, Recreational Sports for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, stated, “What the students here have been able to do with creating the #NICEnomination movement has truly been remarkable. Their passion for making a positive change in the lives of others is motivating them in ways that will certainly have a lasting impact on UW-L students, the La Crosse community and beyond”.
The Rec Sports staff is hoping for this initiative to expand, so that other students and communities can benefit from small acts of kindness.
