An Overseas Adventure: The Importance of Studying Abroad

"The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams,” said Oprah Winfrey, and she is absolutely right. My name is Greisis Rodriguez from the Dominican Republic and I currently study in New York. Coming from a single-parent family and with three younger siblings, I do not have all the material advantages many of my friends possess because my mom decided to put education first no matter the cost, and she was determined to keep us enrolled in an American school. She was convinced that the education we received would surpass her expectations and help my siblings and I become citizens of the world by learning about a different culture.
After years of studying at that school, I realized I was in love with American culture from head to toe. Mesmerized at its grand history, leaderships, and its economics, I was sure that I wanted to study abroad in the United States of America. In March 2013, tears of happiness engulfed my eyes as I read my acceptance letter from Manhattanville College.
Today I have been away from my family for about six months alongside a culture I believed I knew, but did not have the slightest idea of what was like to live in. It is common for people to perceive a society different from what it really is because of the media’s distortion, thus I encourage all who can study in another country to do so. It not only helps us discover new customs, but it expands our knowledge as young adults for us to disseminate at home later on. The world has turned to a sole country in which its citizens unite to make it better for generations to come. So what better way than to start from teaching the youth? Studying abroad is a rewarding experience for the students, their home countries, and the foreign nations they choose to go to. Just as the globe’s expanding interconnections, there are no limits to our goals to help others, nurture our minds, or meet new people, for example. Just as the world becomes a changing mosaic, there are no limits to our dreams. Studying abroad is an opportunity for personal development and the exchange of ideas, and if we continue to do so, then we will live without the immorality, violence, and corruption that cloud our bright future.
