Why study abroad? Ask Michelle Obama

    Learn From Experience

This past January I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to the United Arab Emirates and experience Muslim culture first hand. I am a huge believer in learning from experience and I learned so much that I can say truly made me a better global citizen. The chance to study abroad for me, was a chance for adventure. I think everyone deserves the chance to go abroad and learn more about who they are and how they can help play a valuable part in the world in which they live. Over in the U.A.E. I made many new friends and was constantly learning. In twelve days I never could have imagined how much I would learn and develop as an individual. I love to share my stories and encourage others to study abroad. Yes I can learn about a culture by reading books, but nothing compares to hands on, experiential learning. While abroad I was open to trying all things new and exciting that the locals did. I wanted to understand what it was really like to live in that area of the world. All the different foods, religions, ethnicities, customs, leisure activities all came together to define the U.A.E. as a unique and special place in my heart. I would not change one moment from my trip, because they all contributed equally to my overall experience. I am so thankful for my trip to the U.A.E. and I challenge other college students to go out of their comfort zones and dive into a new culture and experience what it is like to be a true global citizen. There is so much to learn, so go out and do it!
