Why study abroad? Ask Michelle Obama

    Expanding my horizons

My "Abroad" experience began in Brussels, Belgium but it certainly did not end there. I was given the opportunity of a lifetime, experiencing another part of this world as a senior in college and I still treasure this experience years later. Studying abroad, particularly in Europe, is so much more than learning about one country, one history, and one culture. During my 4 months in the beautiful old city of Brussels, I learned so much about the cultural nuances of other Belgian cities such as Ghent, the importance of "green" transportation in other countries such as the Netherlands, and even had the opportunity to feel the thrill of riding a camel in Tunis, Africa! Each experience was so enriching in it's own unique manner that when I came home I knew I would never be the same (as cliché as that may sound). "News" no longer means what was going on solely in my little city of El Paso, Texas. By becoming just a little bit Belgian as well as American, my world awareness is vastly expanded. What happens everywhere means so much more to me now, and my ambitions now reach far beyond the borders of my own city and country. I highly recommend that any student with a hunger and curiosity of life take the initiative and leap of faith to immerse themselves in a world unlike their own. They will find that they will have a new understanding, caring, and compassion for different people and different places that cannot be replicated with any other experience on this planet.
