2009 USGS Photos of Mudslide Area East of Oso, Washington

CNN – This note is to call attention to a theory that the death of perhaps over one hundred individuals may have been avoided if in the future the processes that ultimately decide what areas are safe to log and safe to build are honed to take into account the circumstances that the attached photos of the USGS MOUNT HIGGINS QUADRANGLE WASHINGTON 7.5-MINUTE SERIES 2009 imagery calls attention. CNN’s coverage of FL 370 has certainly been thorough and will hopefully help to bring about changes that will help avoid such catastrophes in the future. It is also my sincere hope that similar coverage of the catastrophe in Washington State would call attention to the actions that authorities may take in the future to prevent such a catastrophe from happening in these United States again in the years to come. Thank you for your service.

Each photos has a caption that is visible by viewing the files properties.

#1 - 2009 photo is showing a view of what I believe to be the general slide area.

#2 - 2009 photo is focused on the actual slide area and what appears to be a semi-circular area that has already begun slipping down the mountainside. It should be noted that the area has been clear cut and is still virtually devoid of any trees of size. I suspect the area may have been replanted but was unable to sustain growth due to the soils movement or its composition.

#3 – 2009 photo is an enlarged view of the slide area and the edge of the community below.

#4 – 2009 photo is an enlarged view of the community below the slide area.

This is a cursory examination of what existed 5 years prior to this catastrophe. People are outraged that FL 370 could just disappear and after several weeks we still are still not certain of the flight’s fate. Perhaps more than 100 Americans have been buried in mud and it is possible that more thorough processes for determining what areas are safe to build and/or log could prevent this type of catastrophe from happening in the future. Thank you again for taking these points into consideration.

I am not intending CNN to print this as a story but rather have CNN look into the points that have been brought up. The pictures could not be downloaded with the other formats available.
