    41 Cubans saved at sea

The captain announced spotting a vessel at around 6:45pm a few hours after we left Key West and decided to slow down the Ecstasy to investigate. Once he realized what was going on he announced that he were going to rescue them. We approached the sinking boat to find screaming man, women and children on board of that sinking boat – The boat was taking on water and the wind and wave were not helping the rescue effort, it took more than an hour to get close enough to the boat. The open a side gate and started loading on board the passengers on the drifting vessel, a total of 41 person ton include about 6 young children.
The Ecstasy tuned around to reinter the US waters to the coast guard could come to get the refugees out of the Ecstasy, the transfer from the Ecstasy to the Coast Guard’s cutter was done via a smaller vessel, not all the refugees could be transferred ( I believe because of the weather conditions) and the coast guard instructed the captain to return to Key West. I am not sure that we actually docked back in Key West again but by the morning all refugees were turned in to the US Authorities and the leg to Cozumel was canceled, Carnival could secure a day in Nassau instead.
We were of course little bit disappointed not to go to Cozumel as we already made the cruise to Nassau, but in all honesty we are extremely happy we were able to save these people, the Ecstasy was probably their last chance. Their boat was taking on water, the sea was rough that day, the wind strong and the night very cold for the season, I don’t see our that craft could have stay afloat another day and they were just drifting.
People reactions were all over the map, some like us were just happy we could participate in saving these people, some felt they should be compensated for the change of plan and we heard extremely nasty comments on the rescue like “should drop some bags od cement and let them sink”.
