This is a scenery shot of Mt. Paektu, the highest mountain in North Korea. The men in the photo are North Korean army men on a tour. I was there summer 2011 during a North Korean holiday period. For the most part, the experience of being in North Korea was surreal; like being in a film full of props. Everything looked correct, but nothing really worked. Mt. Paektu was a surprise. All I really knew when I booked the tour was that we would take a domestic flight to the north near the Chinese border to see the birthplace of Kim Jong Il. The actual experience was much more than that-the scenery was beautiful and unspoilt. There were points during the trip when we would stop and wave at the Chinese people on the other side of the river. It was definitely an interesting experience.
