    In praise of “other mothers”

Greatest Mom a Girl could have, my Dad

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     When Coni208's mom left, she was just 11 years old. So her father slipped on the "mom" hat as well guiding her daughter through puberty and relationships all while continuing to work as a pipe fitter and supporting her three brothers. "He always gives so generously to us all, even if we don't deserve it! He's the best mom this girl could ever wish for," she says.

The greatest mom a girl could have is her father. A 1st generation, Sicilian man back in 1973, who raised his 11 year old daughter, because his wife (my mom) moved out... He worked full time, came home and cooked dinner, not they way mom did, and at 11 years old, I told him so, but he tried. When I became a "woman", my brother told him and when I came home that night he hugged me and told me he knew of these things (how embarrassing lol) He drove me to the Pharmacy to get "things" ... He went to the super market every weekend and while making his list, he would ask me, while clearing his throat, if I needed anything, which meant feminine products. He would buy them and put them in my room. My 62 year old husband wouldn't do that for me now. He took 5 other giggling girls on a ski trip with school, he followed the bus so 4 other of my friends, who didn't get picked to go, could now go. He walked around the ski resort all day, then drove us 5 giggling, loud girls home. I'm sure he was praying for us to fall asleep. He drove friends of mine to Great adventure and the boardwalk so we could ride the rides and ate lots of junk food, while he paid and watched. Comforted me during heart aches and was ALWAYS there for me and my 3 brothers, and still is!! All the his grand kids adore him! He is 85 now and still going strong. A retired Union Pipe fitter, yet still works 4 days a week, without complaining and is thankful, he still can and has no plans of retiring... Has overcame prostate cancer has Mesothelioma, but fortunately, has no horrible symptoms and Glaucoma and 2 times a days uses his drops to control it.. I'm 51 now and he still mothers me and all of us, still makes Sunday dinner and all the Holidays. My sons are always amazed at pop-pops stamina and his love he always gives so generously to us all, even if we don't deserve it! He's the BEST mom this girl could ever wish for ! He is a true inspiration to us all! I love him with all my heart!!
