Music in Milan: A Concert in 2012
For two hours I sat and intoxicated myself listening to the works by Elgar, Paisiello, Beethoven, Purcell, Bartok, Ligeti, Mozart, Handel, Khatchaturiam and Berlioz (see photo no. 4 for the list), all of which were well applauded. The piece that received the loudest cheers, however, was R. Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra" which was featured in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
This may be a far cry from a still unfulfilled item in my bucket list, that is, to watch an opera at Teatro alla Scala, but I put it forward as one of the experiences one must have of the city, indeed, one evening in my life that I won't ever forget.
When a tourist comes to Milan, there are non-negotiables like visiting the Duomo, or shopping in the world's fashion capital or in Italy's commercial centre. For myself who goes there only insofar as it occasionally becomes part of my apostolate, in ministering to my fellow Filipinos, knowing Milan goes beyond seeing the most photographed spots, sniffing its famous perfumes and tasting Italian cuisine. This concert that I watched moves me into another dimension: listening to music in a concert hall in Milan to Milanese musicians.
Do not be limited to the sights and the flavors of Milan. Go also for its sounds.
