    Splashing Around

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     smish told me she captured this image in March: 'The whole scene was quite memorable, actually. I was in the Congo to take pictures emphasizing the strength of women. We pulled off the side of the dirt road to be able to shoot a few women washing large loads of laundry in the river, all while balancing a baby on their backs. While the youngest of children stayed with their mothers, the majority of kids splashed in the river, clearly enjoying their after-school time. I had a smile on my face the entire time as the children jumped in and out, splashing each other and laughing non-stop. While in the Congo, I loved taking photos of children, but I especially enjoyed this scene because it's not often that a foreign photographer is able to capture children playing without disrupting the fun and games.'

This iReport was featured as the travel photo of the day on July 2, 2014.

While capturing stills for the production of IMAGINE CONGO, a feature documentary exploring the strength and resilience of women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we found a group of village children playing in the river outside of Kiwanja, while the local women washed laundry nearby.
