    Staten Island 8-year old Drummer

My son Malcolm, is gaining popularity and skill as he drums his way to success. As an infant, when we arrived home from church, he would head to the kitchen and pull out the pots and pans to setup his drums for the day. Then one day at a regular church service, he got up from his seat and walked over to sit with the usual church drummer. From that point on, he owned that spot. After some time, he would eventually occupy the drummer's stool where he would play along with "Happy Birthday" and some of the usual songs played during morning service even though his little feet were unable to reach the floor.
For his third birthday, we gave him a junior starter set, it didn't survive his learning curve nor his power. We replaced the starter set with a full sized set he still uses today.
Malcolm now regularly drums for two of the 4 choirs associated with our church, he has played in Greenwich, CT; Newark, NJ; Brooklyn, NY and many points in between. Malcolm has played for the world famous PS 22 Chorus, and has appeared in two Gospel Festivals as a solo performer. He has performed with the music school he now attends in their annual recital. His latest showcase of his talent occurred when he was invited to sit in with an oldies band at a local restaurant. The story was picked up by our local newspaper; The Staten Island Advance. A Facebook message later, I was on the phone with a segment producer from a national network's local affiliate. The story has increased his profile, and I now look to strike while the iron is hot. We are pursuing an opportunity for him to sit in with Questlove on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon
