Measles Outbreak in District Thatta, Sindh
The Team Pakistan Fisher Folk Forum visited the Sonehri Village, UC Sonda, Thatta and its outskirts on 10th April 2014, findings are under. The obvious truth, as long as measles is being infecting children since last month in Village Sonehri and its outskirts. 185 children affected by Measles and Pneumonia, 7 children died in that case; Haider age 11years, Mairaj age 4years, Basit age 8years, Simra age 2 years, Gulsher age 3years, Bisma age 2years and Sahil age 2years. The main cause of this outbreak is no proper health provision to the peoples of Sonehri VIllage, almost all the communities of village Sonehri rely on fishing, owing to lack of health services fishermen community not able to get treatment to their children. Village Sonehri is located 3 Kilometers faraway from national highway, although people have extreme hard to admit their children in Union Council BHU or the way to Thatta. They starve hunger almost, with empty pockets they even cannot afford one rupee on health. There is dispensary in village Sonehri which was found closed from last 8 years. The dispensary opened from 7th of April 2014, for the sub immunization activity for the measles affected children. Moreover the dispensary only provides medicines for Fever, Cough and other disease, in the case of Measles and Pneumonia they refer the children to Makli Hospital, Thatta Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital Karachi and other private clinics and hospitals.
Overall, 185 measles cases were identified, the age of cases ranged from (73 were infants); 65 were aged in the crease of 5 years, and 47 were from 5 to 12 years of Village Sonehri.
According to Medical Officer Hassan Gandro of DHO Thatta, more than 5000 thousand children vaccinated of Union Council Sonda, District Thatta.
Government is entirely responsible for these deaths; there are chances of mass outbreak of Measles not only in the village, but in the District.
