Student Association Candidates Call for Clean Elections

The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse campus is buzzing with the promise of competitive elections in the air. April 15th marks the end to a three week campaigning period for candidates running for president and vice-president of Student Association. This year students of UW- La Crosse have played witness to a myriad of campaign techniques, but none more new than the prominent use of anonymous Facebook posts.
Candidates spoke out earlier this week about the desire for clean campaigns in response to a slue of negative posts to a well known Facebook group “Lax Rants and Raves”. After seeing a productive first week of campaigning littered with supportive and positive posts to the group by students remaining anonymous the posts took a turn to destructive when students began posting racists and degrading comments about each of the three tickets.
This string of negativity sparked a timely response from each of the candidates, presidential candidate Kaylee Otterbacher commented on the response, “I messaged the administrator of Rants and Raves and asked that they refrain from posting negative messages about the elections and they responded that they would no longer be posting anything, negative or positive”. The candidates also responded collectively with a video asking the students of UW-L to focus on ideas rather than the negativity and to join each of them in running a clean campaign until election day.
The video, which was posted to Facebook Thursday evening has been shared almost twenty shares and almost 5,000 views. In the video five of the six candidates, including Kaylee Otterbacher can be seen speaking to the UW-L Student body about the desire to keep elections positive and idea driven. They ask students to refrain from writing to pages like the Rants and Rave pages and ask students for their participation in the upcoming election.
Elections for the UW-L Student Association Elections will take place April 15th from 7am to 7pm.
