Impact Your World
7-Year Old New Jersey Girl Author's 2 Kids Books to Inspire Children with Cancer
Purpee the Purple Dragon is the the main character in our new children’s book series. Purpee will serve to inspire kids around the world and allow children with pediatric cancer to live vicariously through an adventurous purple dragon and his friends.
Here’s our story, our project details and how you can help us make it happen….
For full details see: www.PurpeeTheDragon.com
It all started one night during our bedtime routine of reading books and telling stories to our 3 young kids. I made up a story about a purple dragon named Purpee, and his friends. My kids loved the story and started asking for Purpee stories every night. Each night Purpee seemed to become a little more adventurous.
One night my daughter Brianna had an idea, “Why don’t we turn these stories into a kids book series?”… and building on her inspiration I tried to think of a way we could make these books different from all of the other great children’s books out there, and then it hit me.
We got to work right away. Brianna started writing the manuscript and brainstorming more adventures. Then we started sketching. First Brianna, then me, and then we hired an illustrator to bring our characters to life. The next thing we knew; Purpee the Purple Dragon, Stinky the Skunk, Shelly and Sunny, twin turtles, and Smokey the Dragon were alive……
The Project Details
Our project is to produce the first 2 books in the Purpee the Purple Dragon series and print 2,500 copies to give out to pediatric cancer patients in hospitals across the US – your backing will help us to do this.
This book series will inspire children with cancer allowing them to live through this dragon, making these books different from most other children’s books.
We will read the books to the children and then spend time asking them what adventures they would like to see Purpee and his friends go on next.
What adventures would they go on if they could?
We will encourage their imaginations, collect their ideas, and even have them create some of the scenes, just like my 7-year-old daughter did for the first 2 books.
Then, we will collect the thoughts and pictures and use them to write more books in the series, which will include the names of those children that contributed. These sick children will live through Purpee and his friends….
And if you think this project couldn’t be any more special – here’s another memorable part of it. Late last year a brave 10-year-old boy from our town, Michael Feeney, sadly passed away after struggling with a rare form of cancer. Not only did he inspire a community, but he inspired Brianna and I in planning this project and also led us to a great organization, Go 4 the Goal, that hashelped us to coordinate with the 12 hospitals that we will be visiting. Michael exhibited many of the qualities of our adventurous Purpee the Purple Dragon and we will be dedicating the first book in our series to his memory.
Our plan is to visit the following hospitals, but we will expand to the west coast and other parts of the US if funding allows....
Yale New Haven Children's Hospital
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Massachusetts General Hospital
The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center
Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital
St Peter's University Hospital
Cohen Children's Medical Center of NY
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children
Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children
Children's National Medical Center
Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center
How You Can Help
Visit our Indiegogo campaign at: www.PurpeeTheDragon.com
Did you know that more than 11,000 young people are diagnosed with cancer every year?? And many of them will spend most of their lives in and out of hospitals lonely and depressed. While Brianna and I can’t cure cancer, we can bring Purpee’s adventures to these children, and then, through the book series, help them to create their own adventures, even if they are in a hospital.
So now we need your help!! The first two manuscripts are written (see descriptions below), the illustrator is ready to go, and hundreds of kids in 12 hospitals are waiting to be inspired….
Your financial support will fund the production and printing of the first two books and our trips to the hospitals. Our goal is to print 2,500 books. If we exceed our goal, we will go to more hospitals, give out more books, and inspire more children.
We plan on giving these sick children the chance to experience adventures that they may never get to live out.
Not only will you feel good about supporting this project, but we have created some great rewards (see below).
We have one month to fund this project - we hope you’ll join us today.
