DEER AND WILD TURKEYS SHARING A MEAL

Jane Westlake took this picture of several deer and wild turkeys sharing a meal in her yard last month. She said they normally have seven or eight deer, mainly yearlings and pregnant does, search for food in their yard. This year, however, they sometimes had up to a dozen at a time. When the bucks came by, they would scare off the does, but after they had their fill, the does and yearlings returned.

The wild turkeys also felt comfortable searching for food in her backyard with the deer present. It is very unusual to see deer and wild turkeys sharing a meal, but this year’s cold snap and snow kept the trees from budding in early spring.

Thanks for sharing, Jane. This is a great picture of New Hampshire's wildlife in our own backyard. Hopefully you will be blessed with some fawns born later this spring.
