    Tortuguero National Park

Parque Nacional Tortuguero is located on the northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. It is made up of over 750 sq. km. of coastal and marine territory, with a 35 km beach. Thousands of marine turtles use this beach as a nesting site and Tortuguero is a major center for turtle research and protection. Licensed guides conduct nighttime tours and watching the turtles lay their eggs in the moonlight is an epiphany no wildlife enthusiast should miss.

Guides also offer daytime tours of the inner waterways by canoe. There is an endless array of birds, monkeys, reptiles, caimans, etc. Of late, crocodiles seem to be moving deeper into the park. You may be treated to a distant view of Turrialba Volcano spewing out ash and smoke.

The park is only accessible by air or boat.
