    Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Even as a resident of the Big Island, I never get tired of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I try to get over there every couple of months for hiking, or to show some visiting family and friends one of the most intriguing places in the world. Every time I go, I meet people who've come from other nations, including Germany, India, and Australia. With Kilauea as the most active volcano in the world, this island is constantly building itself, getting larger by the moment.

Almost every "first glance" picture I've seen of Volcanoes National Park is of the lava spilling into the ocean. While that is certainly spectacular, it's not the only thing to see and do at the park. One of my favorite trails to hike is the Kilaeua Iki trail. It's 4 miles round trip, and takes you through the Kilaeua Iki crater that erupted in 1959, creating a huge lake of lava. Obviously, that lake has since cooled and hardened, so that now tourists can walk across it. It even has a trail guide and guide posts if you want to learn about the geology and history of eruption events from that time.

Some other places to visit are Thurston lava tube (an underground transport system for lava when the volcano is erupting), and the currently erupting Halema'uma'u crater just a short distance away from the Visitor Center (seen erupting beyond the crater walls in the first picture above).

This place is a must-see for people visiting from all around the world!
