Fire at Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana UPDATED
A fire sprouted out of "Isla" a restaurant at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic at approximately 3:30 on 4/16/2014. Workers at the resort say it was a kitchen fire gone out of control that eventually lit the roof (made completely of bamboo and leaves) on fire. The fire could first be seen only at the top of the large restaurant and the many workers who attempted to put it out (using garden hoses and buckets filled from the pool) did not have a chance as the fire quickly engulfed the rest of the roof in under 15 minutes. Then came there next problem they had not realized the wind was blowing the fire to an adjacent building, also built of the same material the fire quickly spread and the wind became there worst enemy. Isla became a lost cause there was nothing they could do to save it and everyone quickly went to try and save the next building which was full of rooms with hotel guests inside, workers ran to the roof top and tried to put it out with whatever they had. This included swatting the fire with the shirts off there backs and maids ran to give them fire extinguishers while others sprayed the roofs of surrounding buildings with water to protect the fire from spreading. They managed to extinguish the fire in this building. A sole fire truck arrived on scene but there was no fire left, Isla had burnt out and was now just a cloud of smoke that could be seen for miles around, including from nearby resorts. This has not been the first fire at The Hard Rock in Punta Cana as there have been reports of others in the past. There have been no reports of injury or death so far.
