The Early Morning Crucifixion in San Guillermo

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Freelance photographer Ruston Banal attended a Good Friday re-enactment of the crucifixion near San Guillermo Parish Church, Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines. “The event is quite different to the more publicized crucifixion in Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga, since this one was solemn and the large percentage of the crowd was a relative of the Kristo (the One who replicates Christ) that was nailed on the cross,” Banal explained.

The man being nailed to the cross, Banal says, has been doing this for 20 years. “He did this as a vow because his daughter suffers from heart disease, which he wanted to be eradicated in exchange for his suffering.”

These are shots of the crucifixion earlier today happened at San Guillermo, Bacolor, Pampanga where a devotee was nailed on the cross. Unlike the similar event in the same province particularly in Cutud, Ciy of San Fernando, the crucifixion in Bacolor, Pampanga does not have a program or theater like plays where actions are staged for viewer's entertainment. The nailing fo the cross in Bacolor is a devotion of a man who wish to have his daughter be healed on her heart disease. He believes that this bow will make his prayers come true as it has been for the past 20 years he has been doing it.
