Good Friday Crucifixions
- Jareen, CNN iReport producer
An estimated 50,000 - 60,000 local and foreign tourists witnessed the annual Maleldo, a Kapangpangan word for Holy Week. It is a re-enactment of Christ's passion which takes place in three key barangays of San Pedro Cutud, San Juan and Sta. Lucia in the city of San Fernando, Philippines.
Among them is the 55 years old Ruben "Mang Ben Kristo" Enaje who was noted for being crucified 27 times since 1985. 2014 may be the final year in which he plans to be crucified and he is now looking for a replacement for his position.
In the Philippines, Good Friday marks by re-enacting the passion and death of Christ, which real nails were hammered in the their hands and feet. The Catholic Church have spoken against the practice.
Approximately 85 percent of 97 million Filipinos are Christian (mostly Roman Catholic).
