    Good Friday at the Colosseum

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     joelsdb attended a Good Friday service in Rome, Italy, on April 18. Pope Francis addressed the crowd. He says the Pope’s message was moving. He says the service lasted two hours, and everyone was standing the entire time. He adds that most people seemed content during the service, spending their time listening, praying and meditating.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

"From the cross we see the monstrosity of mankind when it lets itself be guided by evil. But we also see the immensity of the mercy of God, who doesn't treat us according to our sins, but according to his mercy," Pope Francis told the crowd gathered for the Way of the Cross near the Colosseum.

Every year, on Good Fridays, the Pope leads the praying of the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the Colosseum. This year, as in previous years, the space in between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum had a big mass of people and this overflowed to the nearby roads. Pope Francis was greeted by a warm applause as he came in order to begin the prayer which lasted for about two hours.

This year's meditations were written by the Archbishop of Campobasso-Boiano, Monsignor Giancarlo Maria Begantini, with the theme "Volto di Cristo, volt dell'uomo" ("The Face of Christ, The Face of Man").
