My kind of town
As all Italian town is not very large and its population (including the hinterland) is about of three million of people... very far from London, Paris, Berlin and Rome, the principal european towns.
I was born 47 years ago, in the suburb of Quarto Oggiaro, in the north-west side of the town, and my parents came from the poorest south of the country in the '50 looking for a work place, like millions of other southern italians.
I love deeply my town, becouse is a cultural mix of people from all over the country and, today, from all over the world.
Milan, like the more famous art cities in the Country, have historical signs from its rich and various past too, but they are hide and to find them you need a good book guide!
Founded by Ancient Romans its firs name was obviousely latin: Mediolanum. From the end of the Roman Empire, it was invaded by a lot of German tribes and then, in the modern age, was occupied by Spanish, French (Napoleon) and since one and half century ago by Austrian.
The most important medieval family of Milan were the Dukes of Sforza, which symbol (an big snake eating a man) is still the town simbol. The Sforza's reign extended from the south for 100 km until Piacenza city and in the north including what is now the Ticino State of the Swiss Confederation and were people speaks currently italian.
The border with Switzerland is very close (about 40 Km) and ofthen rich industrial and families illegally deposited there milions and millions of euro for not pay taxes...
Here I send some pictures...
Have a nice day.
