Success for the Men's Club Volleyball Team

The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse is home to many accomplished Club sports teams. One team in particular is the UWL Men’s Club Volleyball team, whose program has become increasingly successful the past few years. The team recently attended the national tournament for the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation (NCVF) held in Reno, Nevada from April 3 to April 5, 2014, returning home with a 2nd place trophy in Division II. Prior to this season, the Men’s Club Volleyball team clenched the National Championship title in 2011, defeating Providence, and in 2012, defeating Air Force. The year of 2013 was an upset when the team lost in the semi-finals to Sonoma State. The program continues to grow each year and it’s team members continue to work toward their goal of another National Championship title.
Throughout the season, the Men’s Club Volleyball team competes in the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference (WVC) playing against other schools in the Wisconsin area, such as Oshkosh, Eau Claire, Stout, Whitewater, Stevens Point, Marquette, and Platteville. While their opponents have the support of a coach and an average of twelve team members, UWL contended this season with no coach and only seven players. Injuries and other commitments in the pre-season caused a few members to drop out early. However, the team chemistry was still at its peak. Two members of the team, Riley Stone, the setter, and John Jablonowski, the outside hitter, have been playing on the same volleyball team since their freshmen year of high school. Their continuous experience playing with each other has been a major contributing factor to the team’s impeccable synergy. Riley Stone states, “It doesn’t matter how talented the team is, if the team doesn’t have good chemistry, they won’t get very far.” The connection between UWL’s teammates was what led them to their great success throughout the season and specifically at the WVC conference tournament.
The WVC conference tournament was held in the Wisconsin Dells the weekend before the NCVF national tournament. UWL fought hard throughout the tournament and finished with a 1st place victory over Oshkosh, who competes as a Division I school. This was the first time all season UWL had defeated Oshkosh, who is their toughest opponent in the WVC. Along with many wins against difficult teams, the team members were recognized for their talent through a variety of awards at the conference and national tournaments. Riley Stone won Most Valuable Player for the conference tournament, while two other members were awarded 1st Team All Tournament. Stone and the President, Nick Korom, were voted All Conference and Jablonowski was acknowledged as MVP of the conference. In addition, four members were presented 1st and 2nd Team of the national tournament and one member received Honorable Mention. These awards are just a small part of the team’s accomplishments throughout the season. The UWL Men’s Club Volleyball team is a well-rounded program that expresses their many talents in every game they play.
