    Drew and John Paul II

General papal audience St Peter's Square, Rome, 17 September 1986. Photo courtesy Fotografia Felici. Though hale and hearty at the time, I was in the special section for the sick as required caretaker for my sister Marie who'd recently suffered a stroke. In the photo, taken by an official Vatican photographer, Marie is to my left, behind His Holiness. I submitted her photo with him in another story on iReport.
Family and friends have commented on Pope John Paul II's kindly expression and on how he and I appear to have locked eyes during the encounter and blessing. It was moments etched permanently in my mind, an indelible few moments with a charismatic human who made you feel as if you were the only person on earth. I think he made most, if not everyone in that section -- the sick and maimed and their caretakers -- feel that. His canonization on Sunday will be an official rite of the Church; we who've known the honor of his presence have always considered him sainted.
