1982 World's Fair Sunsphere
- Jareen, CNN iReport producer
The theme of the 1982 Worlds Fair in Knoxville, also known as the Tennessee International Energy Exposition was "Energy Turns the World".
The Sunsphere held a full service restaurant and was also an observation deck for the fair.
The Expo ran from May until the end of October 31 1982.
The Sunsphere and the Tennessee Amphitheater are the only structures that remain from the 1982 World's Fair. After several openings and closings the Amphitheater and the Sunsphere were renovated in 2007. The Fair grounds are used as a huge city park. Many festivals and events are held each year. As far as I know the Sunsphere is still in use with a restaurant, different business's and office's on the remaining floors.
It is a beacon to downtown Knoxville. You know you have arrived when you see the Sunsphere in the distance.
