Zone9 bloggers and journalist arrested in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia the EPRDF regime continues to clamp down dissent and journalists. In a latest repressive act on journalist and bloggers the dictatorial regime yesterday arrested Zone 9 Bloggers Abel Wabella, Atnaf Brhane (translator for Global voices), BefeQadu Z Hailu, MahiFantish Wube , Natnail Feleke along with Journalist Tesfalem Waldyes.

The imprisonment of Eskinder Nega, Reeyot Alemu, Wubshet Taye among other journalists, several opposition members and supporters on trumped up charges raised serious concern from international rights organizations. Several reports of US state department, statement by higher representative Catherine Ashton of EU external action service raised concern regrading "lack of clarity" on Ethiopia's vaguely defined Anti-terrorism proclamation- used to crack down dissent. The UK goverenment also recently issued a report expressing its concern on human right abuses in Ethiopia saying "the UK is concerned about continuing restrictions on opposition and dissent in Ethiopia, through use of the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation (ATP) and the Charities and Societies Proclamation (CSP)".

The international community can and should do more to secure the release of innocent political prisoners in Ethiopia which requires concrete and coordinated action.
