For the love of flats
Climbing Down the Ivory Tower
You can't climb down from the ivory tower while wearing four-inch heels! I learned this lesson when I retired in 2012. I’d been a professor of marketing and the Assistant Dean of the School of Business at a university in Burbank CA that produced grads for LA’s entertainment and fashion industries. It had been a fantastic career in which I could teach, do research, and look trendy at the same time.
On retirement, my husband and I relocated to a rural farm and ranch community of 3300 people, where my father’s family had settled before the turn of the last century. The move demanded that we make more adjustments than I could had envisioned, including the need to do something about my cutting-edge wardrobe of shoes. They simply were over-the-top for hobnobbing with the folks in my little town as well as for getting around without breaking a hip.
As luck would have it, our move occurred just when flats hit the runways. Seems that the shoe gods had decided to smile at we who had lived in heels for the past umpteen years. I now own who knows how many pairs of flat-heeled shoes that fit both my love of fashion and our small-town lifestyle.
