QUAIL Chat in SoCal High Desert

Global warming, drought...what has happened to our Quail? We have been living in the high desert for about 12 years and enjoy watching all the wildlife. In years past we have had many Quail Families with a mom & dad & several babies. This year so far, we have NOT seen any babies. From time to time we see a 'couple' but not many of them either. We seem to have a good amount of Coyotes who gather on and near our land with quite a Noise at night.  Our home  is tucked in the canyon of the Sawtooth Mountains with open land & lots of wildlife around. I don't know if the larger families of coyote have taken the baby Quail, or it is the drought we have been in for several years. I sure hope it goes back to a more balanced population soon. Maybe later in the year we will have some babies?! Fingers crossed.
I watched & listened to this Quail the other day & if you listen closely you will hear him being answered by another quail in the distance. They perch up high & chat back & forth with each other as if giving the 'all clear'. They are beautiful little birds. Note the detail in their face & head.
